How Benson Industries makes task management proactive and efficient
40 to 60 units for smaller active projects; 350 units for larger active projects
5 to 10 repeated layouts per building
Bridgit’s common users are large-scale general contractors and developers, whereas the Benson Industries team is made up of subcontractors. Normally, GCs use our field software to assign tasks to their subcontractors who are only able to view what’s assigned to them or their trades.
The Benson team is setting themselves apart by using Bridgit to keep tasks organized internally. By using for a first pass on a project, they are able to address issues proactively and deliver quality results to the hiring GC while staying efficient. As a result, all parties involved save time – and money.
How Bridgit met Benson
Benson’s estimator, Natalie, was looking for punch list apps when she came across Bridgit. She brought it forward to Tim, the president, who made the final purchasing decision in 2016. They’ve been using Field on projects with fellow Bridgit customers like Homewood Constructors, Cressey, and ITC ever since. They are incredibly engaged customers and have no qualms about suggesting features for new iterations of the app; many of which have been implemented.
The biggest challenge was managing expectations around the learning curve that adopting new software carries with it. Kean de Vries, one of Benson’s project managers, was enthusiastic about the new tool and viewed that as an opportunity to help with the onboarding process.
Now, the app is fully integrated into Benson’s workflow. Tim really advocated and enforced its use because he knew the team needed to have this as part of their subs program; Kean helped to push the vision forward.
Benson’s general workflow
Estimator and architect work to devise shop drawings of cabinets that align to unit layouts
Units are framed and drywalled, and the site is measured to ensure drawings work with reality of site situations
Product control team creates and submits paperwork to the factory
A few of the projects that used Bridgit:
At Benson, the main use case for Bridgit is task management. They organize tasks with different tags. Everything gets entered into the Task view to start, then they use standardized tags to filter through. Some of these tags include:
Trade damage: Record damage and send back to GCs
Site issues: Product or installation is affected, but it’s another vendor’s issues to correct
Leftover material: Assemble and organize surplus materials and keep track
Parts request: Incomplete products shipped, and team at Victoria office can see what’s needed
They’ve really mastered accountability with these tags. As subs, they are the gatekeepers between GCs and owners on a project. General contractors know exactly what to do when they want to know how the completion of their project is going, and Benson HQ are given the tools needed to manage site material supply.
Kean has managed a number of projects for both general contractors and developers that are already using Bridgit Field. If he works with a company that isn’t, he is quick to recommend that they look into its implementation on current and future projects.
More about Benson Industries:
In 1976, Paul Benson made the switch from making cabinets to owning a business when his employer said he was going to close up shop. Rather than letting the business fail, Paul gathered the skills that he acquired as an apprentice, engaged his thirst for innovation, and ventured into being the owner-operator of a small cabinetry shop on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Today, Benson Industries specializes in high-end, multi-residential builds and serves designers, builders and developers alike to deliver the best quality product as efficiently as possible.
